CelebPoker Package Winner Achieves Ambition

CelebPoker Package Winner Achieves Ambition
CelebPoker Package Winner UK CelebPoker player Matthew Tranter took the next step in his poker career by winning a package to the Irish Winter Festival that took place from October 29th 31st, 2011. As a loyal player of CelebPoker, Matt will be aiming for more package wins in our online satellites for land based poker tournaments. We caught up with himto find out a bit more. What do you do (occupation, studies, hobbies etc?)I have been making a living by playing poker for the last couple of years. Prior to this I studied software development. I greatly enjoy skiing, socializing, reading and a wide variety of music; primarily drum & bass and dubstep which I find very helpful as a driving force during long poker sessions. How long have you been playing poker and how did you start?I have been playing poker for 5 years. Poker first caught my attention when some of the better players started to move over from the real time strategy game “Starcraft” that I was playing competitively at the time, they all showed great results and this opened my mind to the advantage of investing my time and dedication into a more profitable venture. Televised poker also added to the appeal to get involved in this exciting game; seeing the pros at the time playing high stakes tournaments for millions of dollars helped fuel my desire to learn and hopefully one day compete with and defeat these great players. Did you use any special strategy to win the tournament?I vary my play style based on the players on my tables at the time. On some tables it is advantageous to play tight (only the best hands) and some loose (many hands), however either way I will try to play those hands aggressively making my opponents make tough decisions whilst giving me information about the strength of their hands. In this tournament I was able to play a loose aggressive style (this means i was playing a lot of hands whilst betting/raising/re-raising rather than calling) and had a very large stack going into the final table.A tight player will make it into the money positions in a tournament more than a loose player, however a loose player will go on the win much bigger prizes more often when they do make the money. Any key moments you remember from tournament? The final table is the most important part of the tournament, with the pay increasing steeply with each extra position gained; here outplaying the other players really matters.I was lucky to have a 2 – 1 chip lead on 2nd place going in to the FT and couldn’t really ask for a better start. The other players were all playing tight against me; trying to avoid me at all costs unless they had a monster hand. This is always a good thing as with nobody trying to contest pots with me I was effectively being given permission to constantly steal chips from the other players allowing me to extend my chip lead significantly… a lot of the pots i won on the FT could have gone to the other player had they tried to play back at me. What do you plan to do with the prize money?I plan to use a lot of the prize money to work my way into a number of large live events. I will be playing the Irish Winter Festival tournament in October and hope that this will be the first of many over the next couple of years. It has been an ambition of mine to expand in to the live poker scene for quite some time now and huge prizes are ready for the taking.I will also re-invest a lot of the money on the Celeb Poker cash/tournament tables in order to continue progressing up through the stakes striving to improve by playing better players and to earn bigger pay days. Advice to other players? You might have to play countless tournaments in order to take a big finish or it could happen on your first one. The important thing is to not let this high level variance affect your play, if you’re not happy with your results so far it does not necessarily mean you’re a bad player as luck is certainly a large factor in poker. Keep a clear head, always be trying to improve your game (there are many resources out there for an aspiring poker player to learn from), put in the hands and the results will follow. Poker Endurance Record Attempt by Phil Laak
Submitted on Tue, 2010-05-25 10:02 Set your calendar for June 2 as Phil Laak is going to attempt to break the record for playing consecutive hours of poker, which now stands at 78. He’ll be at the Bellagio in Las Vegas trying to break Paul Zimbler’s record for playing poker that was set in 2009. Laak Challenging Others to Play Laak, who is known at The Unabomber due to the way in which he dresses, has sent out a challenge to those via his site, Unabomber Poker, to play him. The event starts at noon on June 2, 2010, and Phil Laak is going with real cash games that start at $10/$20. The Run The Unabomber is looking to run straight through without breaks until the end of the World Series of Poker (WSOP). That will be more than three straight days of poker. How’s he going to do it? Laak has been training. Fried food, ice cream and cheese have been cut out of his diet. He’s planning on being active the day before and getting 10 hours of sleep, waking around 11 am for the noon start. You can Play at this Charity Event Laak is giving half of the cash from the event to Camp Sunshine, which helps kids who are facing the challenges of life changing diseases. Anyone has a chance to play against The Unabomber as he attempts to set the record for consecutive hours of poker playing. Here are three ways to qualify. On May 27, Unabomber Poker will host a $50 buy-in tournament at 6 pm PT. The winner gets to go to Vegas. The buy-in is refunded to everyone after the tournament. For those with a literary bent, you can write a 100- 250-word essay on why you should get the chance to play against the bleary-eyed Unabomber. Submissions should be sent to blog@unabomberpoker.com. Finally, if you play one hand of poker on Laak’s site, you’ll be part of a random drawing for the event. Each of the three winners gets three nights’ free accommodations at the Bellagio. So, if you want to be part of history and take on Phil Laak, get over to Las Vegas as The Unabomber tries to set the new poker playing record on June 2.

Pro Blogs: The Role of Luck in Poker by Alec Torelli
March 12 2012, Alec Torelli Related Articles Pro Blogs: Filtering the Noise — Cash Games or Tournaments by Alec Torelli Pro Blogs: How To Treat Your Customers by Alec Torelli PartyPoker Weekly: Bankroll Booster, Qualify For WPTs, The Big Game and More! Share It Tags Alec Torelli, Player Blogs Print Poker pro Alec Torelli brings us his latest blog on the role of luck in poker. My thoughts on cash games and tournaments. A personal story. The sequal to Filtering the Noise: Cash Games or Tournaments? My Take Tournaments by nature are a more simple form of poker. The short span at which they are deep stacked (several hours of play) is quickly over and soon the play becomes rather rudimentary. Its not to say there isnt skill or that experienced tournament players arent better at picking off spots, but the margins are much smaller, and a lifetime of playing is not enough to realize ones true expectation. It is often said that few can make the transition or be successful at both tournaments and cash games. Thats only half true. The fact is, few tournament players can win at high stakes cash games, whereas all high-stakes cash game players can win at tournaments (not all rectangles are squares, but all squares are rectangles). The Reasons The primary reason better players choose cash games is obvious. There is more money. Others are more obscure. Many poker players prefer to remain anonymous. Being labeled as a professional hinders ones ability to play in the amazing games where politics are involved. Who wants to play with someone who always wins? Some avoid tournaments because for tax purposes. Sweden for example, home of some of the worlds best poker players, enforces a usurious 50 percent tax rate on tournament winnings. Combined with the rising cost of travel and accommodation, its extremely difficult for the tournament poker player to show a long term profit. The Difference Cash games are tougher because the players sit with more money relative to the blinds. The deeper the stacks, the tougher the decisions. This means there is more room for play and more decisions are made on the river. River decisions are where the tough players exploit opponents the most because you always either have 100 percent or 0 percent chance of winning. If you make a mistake, by folding the best hand when the pot is $10,000, it adds up quick. Translation: Far less variance and far less luck. Tournaments Explained Although they may be skilled, when tournament superstars win consistently, they are always benefactors of what Nassim Taleb calls the professional coin flipper. If someone enters a coin flipping contest with 10,000 people, eventually there will be one winner. Surely that man would go on to write a book about how to beat your opponents at flipping coins. But would one really infer that this man is better than you or I? This may be a bit dramatic, because it implies the analogy that a tournament, like coin flipping, requires no skill. While this isnt true, the amount that exists is not enough to warrant many of the results. My Experience Ive been fortunate to have a promising tournament record. With that, Ive received some exposure, sponsors and perhaps undeserved credibility within my industry. As much as I chide some of the aspects of tournaments, there is a ton Ive gained from my experience in them. For that I am grateful. The 16 year old in me still dreams of final tabling a major televised event. Its a sensation that will never get old. Each year as the WSOP approaches, I vow to focus more on cash because thats how I earn my living. But, when I get up in the morning and hear that the $5,000 event has 1,400 players offering a first prize of $1,000,000, sometimes, I cant help myself Im compelled to play.
